  1. Past hour
  2. Thanks for the tip! I'm pretty sure I know what to look for in that area because I've owned the 55k before and am familiar with the engine.
  3. Today
  4. It used to be a problem with pre-facelift procedures, but now it's completely fixable and backed by research. The initial concern primarily pertained to vehicles kept outdoors whose owners failed to take the necessary precautions, such as being alert for the reversible symptoms of water intrusion and clogged drains, and who foolishly believed they could carelessly open a damp trunk lid. The more pressing issue with the SL55 is the question of who drove the modest 500bhp vehicle—a little old lady on Sundays perhaps—or whether a dozen owners marvelled at its power while neglecting maintenance, "leaving little jobs to the next owner."
  5. Finding replacement components for the R230 shouldn't be too difficult. Lots of options for both new and used components
  6. Upon reviewing it, it appears to be a fair price for that vehicle.
  7. Like when I was thinking about getting an R129 SL (which I still am), but now that I'm older, I can't help but be captivated by these stunning Mercedes-Benzes. Obviously, things like age and obsolescence will be major issues, but I'm willing to put money into fixing them if that makes sense.
  8. Just made £12,250,63,000 on credit. The V55 SPR was
  9. I get the feeling that maintenance can be pricey, but you get a lot of use out of them, and it's clear that they've stopped losing value. They are fairly complicated machines that would have been a smart investment a decade ago. ABC and electronics (including the aforementioned boot leak) would occupy the bulk of my attention. Additional issues with R230s include fuel tank baffles and, more recently, corrosion. It would be wise to spend an extra £5–10,000 on a pristine vehicle with low mileage rather than a beat-up one with 100,000 miles, etc.
  10. Superb vehicles, but they're already 20 years old.... You can see that SPR Autos spent four grand on repairs after working on a customer's 55-inch vehicle. If money is not an object, then get the best one you can find (but don't pay £20,000 from a dealer!). Still, you should budget some money for repairs, AMG tax, and other related expenses.
  11. Although this may only be a problem with pre-facelift models up until 2007 or 2008, water seepage into the boot is a prevalent issue that can damage the electrics and boot/roof mech.
  12. Salutations Everyone, Posting here has been a while for me. However, I've been seriously contemplating a handful of Mercedes-Benz models, including the R230 SL55, during the past twelve months. Given the wealth of information available on this forum, what recommendations do you have for anyone looking to purchase or already own an R230 SL55? I have two CLS 55s under my belt, so I know my way around an engine. I understand that there may be additional maintenance/preservation concerns as these vehicles age, but that was a long time ago. Nevertheless, it might be helpful to have more knowledge about things like the roof mechanism. Hearing other people's perspectives on Specification makes my day. The car below caught my eye at an evening car gathering I went to at Shelsley Walsh a few months ago; it was absolutely breathtaking. Thank you
  13. no worries mate I was having the same doubts myself and mechanic's had a look and couldn't find anything serious. Took it out for a decent drive afterwards and it feels great Still can't quite believe I bought a car without seeing it first Anyway all sorted now. Thanks for the advice everyone
  14. Well I'll eat my words then Rob haha ... glad it's turned up mate
  15. It's here! Driver dropped it off earlier today first thing I did was have a good look round it. Interior is very clean and the bodywork looks decent too Got the V5C MOT paperwork and service records with it. Booked in with my mechanic so we'll see what he says but at the moment I'm pretty pleased Was starting to worry for a while there lol
  16. Hi, Was looking at a Skoda Karoq SE L on eBay earlier and the seller name rang a bell when I saw this thread. Thought the price looked a bit suspicious at first. Might give them a ring tomorrow and see what they say Cheers
  17. Interesting seeing this mentioned here in the background for this discussion I worked in their accounts department before moving to Manchester last autumn. The repossessed cars were a newer part of the business. Started around summer 2024 if I remember right, they were getting vehicles from finance auctions and selling them on. The idea behind the segregated payment account and return period was to make people more comfortable buying remotely. Obviously anyone buying should still check the details themselves
  18. Cheers everyone had another chat with them and decided I'm going ahead, waiting for the invoice now. They've answered my emails pretty quickly so far
  19. Mine was a Volvo V60 R Design just before Christmas. Bit of a wait getting it delivered. Was told about a week but ended up being 10 days I was the same as you Rob with the payment. Didn't particularly like the idea of transferring that sort of money before seeing anything Spoke to them a few times on the phone and they explained their separate account arrangement. Said the money wasn't released until I confirmed I was happy with the car I didn't independently verify how that worked so wouldn't tell anyone to rely on it without checking
  20. I bought a Nissan X-Trail Tekna through them back in November in this story. Was a repo as well the car arrived in really nice condition to be fair They gave me 14 days to check it over so I took it down to the Nissan place near me in Nottingham. They went through it and couldn't find anything worth worrying about Rang the company the next day and told them I was keeping it That was my experience anyway
  21. Bank transfer upfront for a car you've never seen? I know some companies sell online now and deliver to your door but I'd want to know exactly who I'm paying and what happens if the car doesn't turn up
  22. Had a nose around Google There's a few reviews mentioning Killeavy Transport for transport work. The company background says they've been around since 2023 doing haulage and that sort of thing
  23. Can you go and look at it? I'd ask that before anything else and if they start saying it's in secure storage or can't be viewed for whatever reason I'd be off, too many people getting caught out with this stuff lately
  24. Never heard of them Rob wouldn't be sending any money until I'd done a bit of digging though. Some of these cheap car adverts are an absolute minefield
  25. Evening all Found a VW T-Roc on eBay that it's listed by Killeavy Transport and I'm seriously considering it. Price is a fair bit lower than the others I've been looking at and apparently sold through an auction which is why it's cheaper... They mentioned something about a segregated business account for the money. Not really bought a car this way before so thought I'd ask on here first Anyone actually used them? Rob
  26. Yesterday
  27. now your talking, best one I ever had was a 1983 TI Green Cloverleaf which I acquired in 1988 with 46k on the clock, that went to the south of France twice and Yorkshire several times as well as numerous trips to the coast, the previous owner had Koni shocks fitted and it went round corners like it was on rails the fortunate thing about this era was the numbers in my local scrap yard from whence I acquired a set of nearly new set of Dellorto 40IDFS and a Scorpion exhaust manifold, quick trip down the local rolling road and I had won an extra 15hp it flew, spark plugs about £12 a set for the proper Lodge item and the proper Selenium oil and filter about £20, inboard discs which if set up properly would stop on a sixpence no power steering and as much feedback as you could ever want through the steering wheel, we were on holiday in Cornwall when the rear pads started squeaking because they were low, no problem, drove to the nearest car spares place and bought a new fitting kit with pads for £40 and changed the lot in forty mins outside the holiday let, simple engineering and easy to fix, no electronic callipers, no diagnostic port, Bosch electronic ignition which I only changed the spark plug leads a couple of times with the distributor cap, no ESP that was down to me to keep it on the tarmac, it finally succumbed to the metal maggot, so I bought a Sprint Coverleaf which did not handle as well, if they bought this out again minus the rot I would buy one today.
