Noise during cold starting diminishes after 15 seconds; is there any incremental benefit?

Greetings,My 220D (OM651) often starts loudly when cold, however after about 15 seconds and upon reaching the end of the road, it becomes quieter.Has anybody used additives to mitigate minor lifter noise?

Observed the Wynns Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment 325ml, which states...Restores the effective operation of hydraulic valve lifters. Reduces noise from hydraulic valve lifters.

Inquiring if it is more deceptive than advantageous, since I am scheduled for service soon, making it an opportune moment with new engine oil.

I recommend including Miller's 'ECOMAX' or Hydra's 'CEBO,' since both will enhance combustion efficiency and reduce noise in a diesel engine. I use the CEBO due of its cost-effectiveness while purchasing 5 liters. The OM651 engine is notably reminiscent of a tractor at idle. As winter approaches, I strongly advise using it at a dosage of 1ml per litre of gasoline; 2ml per litre will not do any damage. I have used it for around 15 years and endorse it unequivocally. Your performance will be enhanced with the additional cetane. It resembles the use of premium diesel.

I hope your noise is not indicative of a timing chain rattling, but you are only at 43,000 miles, if I recall correctly.

Anticipate the detractors, labeling it as fraudulent nonsense. πŸ˜‚

Apologies for the difficulties associated with using a tiny smartphone screen. This inquiry pertains directly to the engine oil additive that affects oil pathways and therefore the behavior of hydraulic lifters.

I get your inquiry; nonetheless, I am uncertain about how screen size influences the conclusion, to be honest. I am unable to provide a response on the hydraulic lifter oil treatment. You are mistaken; the OM651 is inherently loud. I provided a recognized answer based on my expertise.

Curiously enough…
Administered the first application of Hydra cetane yesterday as a component of winter preparations. Significantly less expensive per liter than purchasing premium gasoline, therefore representing a more economical alternative to continuous premium fuel use.


Incidentally, one of my sons is employed by a certain Formula 1 racing team and has previously worked at the Millbrook testing facility in the UK.

We have already noted that earlier testing on gasoline additives were inconclusive or not publically available; hence, I am observing vehicle performance for future quantifiable 'imperial' assessments. πŸ‘

Thank you for your response. I have had a C-class (OM651) for nine years. I agree that it is quite loud, like a tractor; but, the OM651 is generally very reliable, which is why I purchased the GLC.πŸ‘

Millbrooks Testing Ground has indeed evaluated a variety of vehicle components.
2- There was no need for it, since the C-class exhibited superior performance owing to its reduced weight and manual transmission.

Magic oil will conceal a loud engine if it is worn. It will not resolve the issue.

What is the mileage?


I own 3,651 vehicles equipped with engines, all of which produce significant noise during cold starts. They have accumulated 200,000 to 300,000 miles as well. It is often the injectors that are audible, rather than the lifters.
