Boxck
I have now come upon the VPS ball joint solution. Instead of upgrading the complete vehicle to V10, VPS offers the replacement ball joint. I own the Large Hex tool for removing the old ball joint, and it seems that the new ball joints do not need the same tool, since they accommodate a regular socket. I requested four for the front end. They have not yet come. The agreement is to retain the control arms on the vehicle and apply substantial heat during the removal of the old joints. Can anybody share their experience on the removal and reinstallation of the new ones? An installation video must be produced for these items! PopeyeR
We attempted to proceed, but were unable since the old ball joints were too tight, prompting the independent shop to refrain from applying any force owing to the heightened danger of breaking the whole wishbone. It is important to mention that I am uncertain whether they attempted to heat the ball joint first; I would presume they did not, since I discovered this information later via this forum. Subsequently pursued the whole M14 V10 conversion at a 50% discount via Audi.
Boxck
This is an unfavourable beginning. I'm pleased to hear that your automobile has been resolved. Thank you.
PopeyeR
Vargalant has exceptional reliability, and the ball joints were impressive. It is certainly worthwhile to attempt, since you will save around $4,500 initially (or about $2,500 even after the reduction). Additionally, be aware that success tales are published on this topic. Heating may be the answer; consider trying it. In the worst-case scenario, sell the ball joints and get a significant discount from Audi.
Carishme
I have done so. Substituted everything. Two remain. Size V10. The installation was not unpleasant. The couple exhibited resistance. I replaced all control arm bushings with spherical bearings. The cost of new control weapons was exorbitant at that time.
NameInterest
I am astonished that this is one of the first threads I recall in which Ed sought assistance. It is remarkable how he has independently determined all the modifications he has performed on the automobile in his films.
Uneripty
Greetings To detach the ball joint, it is necessary to loosen the conical seat while retaining it inside the wheel bearing housing. Subsequently, apply heat to the area where the ball joint is affixed to the axle arm and detach it using the suitable tool. Thoroughly clean the thread before installing the replacement ball joint using thread-locking adhesive.
Istairde
During my procedure, I had to consistently apply heat to the ball joints and use an impact wrench to initiate movement of the ball joint. Heat is crucial, since the aluminium control arm expands more than the steel ball joint and also facilitates the application of Loctite. Apply heat, utilise impact to slightly rotate the joint, and then continue the process until it becomes loose. The induction heater outperformed the heat gun. Ensure the correct rotation by unscrewing the ball joint clockwise via the arm. The ball joints may be replaced without detaching the control arms from the frame.
