2004 318ti Compact - Valve Stem Seals, Garage Assessment / Expenses / Assistance

Recommended Posts

133,000 miles on the odometer, E46 Compact 318ti, automatic gearbox.

In recent weeks, I have observed white smoke emanating from the exhaust, particularly after accelerating from a stationary position at traffic lights or in congestion. Engaging in inactivity.

I have just taken it to a garage for diagnosis of the issue.

The stem seals are defective, resulting in oil contamination of the spark plugs, necessitating replacement of gaskets, seals, and related components.
The cylinder head must be removed and also require skimming.

They have estimated a cost of between £800 to £1,000. Predominantly labour-intensive, it is estimated to require approximately two days to complete.

Can somebody provide clarification on this matter? Is this price favourable?
Could other issues arise subsequently, resulting in increased costs?
Would you advise consulting a specialist?
I have read that it can be altered without detaching the head.
Are there any mechanics available for employment opportunities? Indeed, I am reluctant to expend such a substantial amount of money.

Thank you.

If the seals in trouble are the valve seals, the cylinder head must be removed; nonetheless, I do not comprehend the requirement for a head skim. Thoroughly investigate several other garages.
